The Sit/Stand Lift - Steady Aid 1500
The sit/stand lift is a mobile lift that allows for patient transfers from a seated position to a seated position. This lift is used for bed to chair transfers; toileting and performing perineal care/changing incontinent briefs.
This lift differs from the 3 other styles of lifts in the fact that the patient must be cognitive and provide some cooperative input. The patient must possess some muscle tone in at least one leg and the trunk - no upper body muscle tone is required. The sit/stand lift is much better for the patient in terms of physiological and psychological benefits than the other 3 full body lifts since he/she is participating in the transfer rather than being completely dependant on the device. Muscle tone and range of motion can be maintained or increased in the patient's legs and blood flow is optimized. The patient's mental acceptance of a sit/stand assistive device is much greater than the 3 other styles of lifts described on this site.
Care givers will find the sit/stand lift much quicker and easier to use than the other full body style sling lifts described. Keep in mind, however, that if your patient's condition deteriorates the sit/stand lift may become incompatible and you will be required to move into one of the other styles of lifts. If this is the case, we highly recommend you purchase from a vendor that with provide you will a trade-in value for your sit/stand lift if you need to exchange it for a full body lift.
Keep in mind that the base of the lift opens and closes to allow it to perform chair transfers. Look for a lift that features a foot pedal adjust mechanism rather than a hand lever. The foot pedal system allows the caregiver to take advantage of their leg strength and body weight to adjust the base rather than shoulder and arm movements that can lead to injury when the lift is loaded. Prior to purchasing any mobile lift, carefully measure the distance between the floor and the underside of your patient's bed. This distance is the under bed clearance required - be sure that the base rail height of the lift you are contemplating does not to exceed this number - if it does the lift will be unusable for bed transfers!
Here is a recap of the advantages and disadvantages of the sit/stand lift.
